Season
round-up
Sponsored Rider In The Ribbons
Samantha Hurn (from the Aberaeron Stud), who, after a serious
riding accident, was helped back into the saddle thanks to generous
sponsorship from Land Rover dealership Cambrian Garages, Aberystwyth,
has had a successful end to her 2005 showing season. At the
Llandysul Show on the 5th September her horse, MiaBella (Moon)
won the ridden pure-bred Arab class, judged by the well-respected
Arab breeder, Mrs Sue Jones, of Bychan Arabians, Llandeilo.
Sam said "I was really pleased that Moon was able to compete
at Llandysul. She had to sit out a lot of shows this season
due to a haematoma from a kick to her shoulder. It was so sore
and swollen that she was unable to travel to the National Arab
Championships, which she qualified for by winning the ridden
Arab class at Aberystwyth County Show earlier this year. However,
she was back to normal in time to put on a good performance
at Llandysul."
Sams welsh cob Teifi Ten CC (Psyche) took third place
in a very well-supported Section D mare and gelding class at
Llandysul. Psyche also won the strongly contested senior Section
D class at the Llanwnen and District Hunt show on August 21st,
shown in-hand by Gary Evans of the Aberaeron Stud, and went
on to take the overall Welsh Breeds Championship against the
first prize winners from the 15 other welsh sections. Sam has
also been supported by Hafod Trailers, Llandysul, whose Bateson
trailers have enabled her horses to travel in comfort to each
show this year.
Cambrian Land Rover helps local rider get back into the saddle
Cambrian Land Rover is generously sponsoring
local rider Sam Hurn and her horses for the forthcoming 2005
show season. Sam, who lives in Talsarn, and is a tutor in Anthropology
at the University of Wales, Lampeter as well as running her
own publishing and event co-ordination company, Owen-Hurn Media
Ltd, had a nasty fall in June 2003, where she lost consciousness
and suffered a fractured skull and internal aural haemorrhage
which resulted in partial deafness, Tinnitus and related balance
and coordination problems. Despite declaring that she never
wanted to see another horse again when she regained consciousness,
she soon relented and, with the help of some friends, acquired
Moon (registered name Mia Bella), a grey Arab mare, and Psyche
(registered name Teifi 10cc), a bay Welsh section D mare who
she had on loan before the accident. However, the combination
of physical restrictions, and severely battered confidence meant
that she kept her feet firmly on the ground for over a year,
and concentrated on showing in-hand.
As a result Moon, who is by Lampeter-based stallion Celtic Shadow,
won the barren mare and gelding class at the Aberystwyth Show
her first County outing, and qualified for the Arab Horse
Societys National Arab Championships 2005 at the 2004
Lampeter Agricultural Show, although she missed her Royal Welsh
debut due to a knee injury sustained the day before her class.
Now, with Cambrian Land Rovers support, Sam is preparing
the horses for the forthcoming show season with a view to competing
them herself under saddle.
"I started riding again just before Christmas. The first
time I got on was also the first time that Moon had had anyone
on her back. Although Id had offers from friends to sit
on their school masters initially to help me get my confidence
back, I wanted to start off with my own because I know and trust
them completely. I am delighted that Cambrian Land Rover can
see the horses potential, and with their support Im
sure well have a really successful season."
"My main aims are to compete Moon at the Wales and West
Arab show in May, and the National Arab Championships in July,
and to enable her to follow in her fathers footsteps and
complete an Endurance GB graded ride (Celtic Shadow is a member
of the Welsh National Endurance team with his owner and rider
Valerie Price-West of White Hill Arabians). I am also keen to
compete Psyche in ridden and working Mountain and Moorland classes
at local shows, culminating in the Royal Welsh Show where her
sire, Dimbeth Sion, owned by the Teifi Stud in Temple Bar, made
history by winning both the ridden and driven cob stallion classes."
"I will also be helping Gary Evans, of the Aberaeron Stud
with showing his Welsh/Arab part-bred, Aberaeron Cariad Kentucky,
in coloured, PBA and PBW classes."
Janette Stewart, Marketing Manager for Cambrian Land Rover says
"We are delighted to be sponsoring Sam and her horses especially
after all she has been through and are excited about what we
are sure is going to be a very successful season"
